The description of aristocracy investing in individual excellence reminded me of what I think is the most fundamental underlying aspects of biological nature: the selection of r vs k strategy. If people get the sense that society is near carrying capacity they adopt k strategy and invest heavily in individual children. Early pioneers had more of an r strategy because it is a more efficient way to scale up and ‘replenish the earth’.
